Over the past few months, we’ve been engaged in a process of studying the way people used our previous website, asking a wide range of users (and potential users) about what they wanted/needed, and testing out different options. And while we’ve already moved a large amount of content (both much of the text of the old website, but also a large number of downloadable documents and reports) across we are still working on both the content of each page, and on the material available, so if you have suggestions – or if you’ve spotted an error, or even if you have suggestions for how we might phrase our language most appropriately – let us know.
The new website has been designed specifically with members of the public in mind. We have, to be honest, spent more time thinking about how the Society can speak to non-Members in a more accessible way than we have been focussed on Members (whom we feel are more likely to be able to navigate the site as it currently stands). Albert Camus once said that: “Psychology is action, not thinking about oneself” and, as a charity, the British Psychological Society has a legal obligation to work for the public benefit. So we set out to create a modern, accessible, friendly website, with non-psychologists firmly in mind.
You will see that the ‘for the public’ element of the site is now prominent and clear. The site is designed to be easy to navigate and modern (technically, it has been designed to be less reliant on navigating to and from a ‘home page’) and better integrated with the Research Digest and The Psychologist. Importantly, we have taken professional advice to make the site accessible to people with visual and other forms of disability.
This is, however, a work in progress.
For some time, we’ll be moving and importing material across to the new site. Much, but not all, of the content will have been edited as it moves from an old site, where it may not have been edited for a long time. That means we’ll also need your input. We welcome comments – praise and criticism – and we welcome suggestions for those necessary changes to material that can be, and should be, worded more appropriately.
