Guidance on Political Activity and Ultra Vires

The attached document lays out the legal principles, rules, and risks, involved in undertaking political activity as a representative of the Society.

As a Registered Charity, the BPS is required to follow the guidelines of the Charity Commission when it comes to undertaking political activity, which may include (but is not limited to):

  • campaigning to raise awareness and to educate the public with regards to a particular issue
  • raising public support for a change in law or policy by the government, local authorities, or other public bodies
  • seeking to influence political parties, policy makers, or public servants
