Psychology and Media Productions: Guidance for Commissioners and Producers

This document will aid productions and those commissioning productions, both fictional and factual, in gaining a clearer view of what psychology as a discipline and profession has to offer, how moral and ethical challenges in making programmes and films can be successfully met and how the BPS can help.

It provides guidance on:

  • Finding the right psychologist

  • Media portrayals of mental health

  • Mind your language

  • Media portrayals of psychology theory and research

  • Safeguarding vulnerable groups

  • Gaining consent from adult participants

  • Sensitivities and vulnerabilities of children  and young people

  • Gaining valid consent/assent from children  and young people

It also provides the reader with several checklists and web resources which are designed to assist them in addressing the issues above.
